Event Recap: RTT Taiwan October BBQ Event

Event Recap: RTT Taiwan October BBQ Event

Located among a myriad of Japanese restaurants, Hinomai Yakiniku was an awesome choice for our October Reach to Teach event! Unlike many restaurants, you have to take your shoes off before sitting down at your table. Our table was designed in traditional Japanese fashion on a raised platform with low ceilings; we had to crouch while walking to get there and sit down. The atmosphere was cozy, with seven of us sharing two BBQ’s and plate after plate of delicious beef, pork, shrimp, vegetables, and more. And of course, the all-you-can-drink keg of beer wasn’t bad either 🙂 After dinner, Carrie and John took us to a cute little iced drink stand in the Dunhua area. If you’re ever in the mood for a spiked Slurpee, this is the place you should go. After that, we walked to On Tap to meet up with more RTT friends waiting for us in the game room. I want to thank everyone who showed up;  I had a lot of fun! There will not be a November event, but we are planning a Christmas event for the beginning of December. Look out for details on Facebook! Cheers, Mary

In addition to offering one of the highest salaries in the business, schools in South Korea offer free housing, free flights, and insurance benefits, among other perks. Over the past year, Asian ESL destinations such as Taiwan and China have been moving towards making a TEFL certification mandatory in their hiring practices. A large number of schools in Taiwan these days are looking for teachers with experience and/or a TEFL certification. Meanwhile, the Chinese government has cracked down on requirements for teachers bound for first-tier cities like Shanghai and Beijing by requesting that teachers be 24 years of age, have a TEFL certification and two years of experience post-graduation, one of which must be formal teaching experience. While it is still possible to find employment in Shanghai and Beijing, it’s likely that teachers that do not meet these requirements are not teaching on a proper working Z visa. This fall, the Korean government made some major changes to their EPIK program, a program that hires ESL teachers for Korean public schools across the country. Teachers with [...]Read More
